SMATRICS EnBW and Wien Energie expand Austria's first ultra-fast charging location
Six years ago, on May 30th, 2018, SMATRICS EnBW and Wien Energie opened the first ultra-fast charging station at the Verteilerkreis Favoriten ("distribution circle" Favoriten) in Vienna. The companies have now joined forces once again and doubled the site's capacity.
A total of four fast chargers (with a total of eight charging points), each with a capacity of up to 300 kW, have been available since the new opening. That is a doubling of capacity. Two are owned by SMATRICS EnBW and two by Wien Energie.
Demand for fast chargers will increase six-fold in Vienna
In recent years, the number of fast and ultra-fast charging points in Vienna has risen from 0 to around 300. In the next six years, i.e. by 2030, the metropolis is expected to have six times the required capacity.
"In order to meet the upcoming demand, all players must join forces. The charging location at Verteilerkreis has successfully demonstrated how the expansion of the e-charging infrastructure in urban areas can be accelerated,” explains Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW.
"Electromobility is the key to the transport revolution! The right charging infrastructure is crucial. In addition to our dense basic charging network with over 2,000 publicly accessible charging points, we are also expanding fast charging stations, such as here at the Verteilerkreis. At these, e-car drivers can quickly and easily fill up with green electricity and continue their journey after just a few minutes,” says Michael Strebl, Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board.
Fast charging with simultaneous grid relief
“At such a busy main traffic junction as the Verteilerkreis in Vienna-Favoriten, we can ensure security of supply to a very high standard with our fast chargers with 300 kW each,” says Hauke Hinrichs, COO of SMATRICS EnBW. In total, a charging process only takes a few minutes. A dense network of fast-charging stations is particularly attractive in urban areas, as people here do not always have the opportunity to charge at home.
The SMATRICS EnBW charging stations are operated with the Verbund Synerg-E buffer storage system. This type of energy storage can further optimize the charging infrastructure: The energy is stored during phases of low utilization of the electricity grid and then released as required. This means that the required amount of energy is available immediately, especially for fast charging stations, even at times of high simultaneous charging demand.
