Electric Travel Across Austria and on Vacation: SMATRICS EnBW Continues to Expand Its Leading Ultra-Fast Charging Network
SMATRICS EnBW is wrapping up the second quarter of 2026 with a major expansion of its Austria-wide charging network: Thanks to 60 new charging points at ten locations, Austria’s leading ultra-fast charging network now features 743 charging points. Easy accessibility and convenient amenities are among the most important quality criteria for charging locations, especially for longer trips or family vacations.
Just in time for the start of the vacation season, SMATRICS EnBW is expanding its charging network in Austria by 60 additional ultra-fast charging points. The company is continues to pursue its expansion strategy and strengthening the charging infrastructure along highways and at retail locations.
The expansion is focused on Vienna: With 20 new charging points one-third of all newly installed charging points are located in the capital. The network has also been significantly expanded in Tyrol and Styria. A total of twelve new charging points are being added at two locations in each of these two states. This represents a 30 percent increase in charging points in Tyrol. In addition, SMATRICS EnBW is commissioning one new location each in Lower Austria and Salzburg, each featuring four charging points. In Upper Austria, another location with eight charging points is being added.
In total, SMATRICS EnBW now operates 743 charging points on its own network, remaining a reliable partner for electric vehicle drivers throughout Austria.
Ideal Conditions for Commuting and Travel
Thanks to long driving ranges and a well-developed fast-charging infrastructure, EVs are no longer used only for short daily commutes but also becoming increasingly popular for longer trips during vacations. Relaxed drives without range anxiety are already possible today thanks to Austria’s high-quality, strategically expanded charging network: 80 percent of all charging locations are situated along highways, expressways, or federal highways. Thomas Landsbek, Managing Director at SMATRICS EnBW, explains: “For electric vehicle drivers, makes charging easy and convenient: an easily accessible charging infrastructure. Our dense network of carefully selected locations with good accessibility makes charging simple and straightforward, without detours.”
Focus on Convenience Services
Another important step that SMATRICS EnBW is taking for the future of e-mobility is the expansion of so-called convenience services—that is, the addition of extra amenities at charging locations. “Charging cannot be viewed in isolation; especially at charging parks without directly connected shopping facilities, additional convenience service infrastructure is needed,” said Landsbek. A variety of amenities are already available at SMATRICS EnBW charging parks. These range from seating areas and electric trash cans to canopies equipped with photovoltaic systems, as well as pylons for better visibility and beverage vending machines. The locations in Pinggau and Gralla (Styria) will be equipped with canopies over the course of the summer. The location in Altlengbach (Lower Austria), which will go into operation this summer with twelve HPC charging points delivering 400 kilowatts of power, will be the first to feature a self-cleaning restroom.
Popular for Everyday Use: Charging Stations at Retail Locations
The charging infrastructure at supermarkets, shopping centers, and home improvement stores has also been significantly expanded, with 40 new charging points added. As a result, the number of charging points at these locations has nearly quintupled over the past two and a half years. “Charging needs to be as quick and easy as possible to integrate into everyday life, and we’re ensuring that by expanding our location partnerships with retail partners,” explains Landsbek.
The goal is to provide charging exactly where people already shop and spend time in their daily lives. The new ultra-fast chargers have a power output of up to 400 kilowatts. Under optimal conditions, this allows drivers to add up to 400 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. This makes it easy to combine charging with shopping.
Regardless of location or the number of available charging stations, 100 percent of the electricity used to power the SMATRICS EnBW network comes from renewable energy sources provided by VERBUND. By the end of 2026, more than 900 ultra-fast charging points are expected to be available in the SMATRICS EnBW network.
