Charging network expansion: SMATRICS EnBW has doubled the number of ultra-fast charging stations in Vienna in 2024

Over the past year, the number of ultra-fast charging stations in Vienna has increased from 42 to 85. Almost 100 percent of this increase is due to the expansion of the charging network by SMATRICS EnBW. The four newest locations of the Austrian e-charging infrastructure operator are located on the grounds of the BILLA and BILLA Plus branches at Breitenfurterstraße 263, Swatoschgasse 3, Pilotengasse 76 and Julius Ficker Straße 91.

“For a city like Vienna, e-mobility is an important part of a comprehensive mobility strategy. A comprehensive and high-performance charging infrastructure is crucial to strengthening confidence in e-mobility, especially for e-mobilists without private charging options,” explains Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW.

Vienna has made significant progress in expanding its ultra-fast charging infrastructure in 2024. The four new locations alone added 30 high-power charging (HPC) points. This means that half of all HPC charging points in Vienna are now provided by SMATRICS EnBW, and the number will continue to grow until the end of the year.

New locations in the 11th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd districts

The state-of-the-art charging points enable e-mobile users to charge enough electricity for a range of up to 400 kilometers in just 15 minutes, depending on the vehicle's power input.

Additional demand for fast charging for e-taxis

The city's regulation that all newly registered taxis from 2025 onwards must be electric also shows that the expansion of the fast-charging infrastructure must proceed more quickly. This means that more than 8,000 taxis in Vienna will be gradually replaced by locally emission-free cars.

“Public and fast charging is essential in Vienna. We will continue our expansion course at the same pace this year and plan to set up around 50 public HPC charging points in Vienna,” says Landsbek.

Another trend is towards larger charging parks: new locations are increasingly being planned with twelve or more charging points – a development that will also benefit future e-taxis and provide economic security. This means that drivers can conveniently integrate the charging process into their everyday lives – even those without private charging facilities.

Largest fast-charging network in Austria with 100 percent green electricity

With currently more than 600 fast charging points at more than 140 locations throughout Austria, SMATRICS EnBW operates the largest nationwide fast charging network. For further expansion, SMATRICS EnBW is also working with well-known partners from various sectors.

The fast-charging locations supplement EnBW's Austria- and Germany-wide fast-charging network, the EnBW HyperNetz, for drivers. SMATRICS EnBW operates all of its fast-charging points using 100 percent green electricity.
