New Charging Park in Suben: SMATRICS EnBW Continues to Expand its Charging Network in Upper Austria
SMATRICS EnBW is expanding its ultra-fast charging network in Upper Austria with the addition of the Suben charging park in St. Marienkirchen. With ten HPC (high-power charging) charging points and additional infrastructure facilities, the location ensures flexible and convenient charging in border region between Austria and Germany. Upper Austria therefore continues to lead the way in Austria in terms of expanding public ultra-fast charging infrastructure.
Anyone travelling by electric car on the A8 Innkreis highway between Austria and Germany will find a new, highly efficient stop in St. Marienkirchen since January 2026.
SMATRICS EnBW, Austria's leading provider of ultra-fast charging infrastructure, is opening a new charging park with ten HPC charging points with a capacity of up to 400 kW in the border area near the Suben motorway exit. Depending on the vehicle model, this is sufficient to charge up to 400 kilometres of range within 15 minutes.
Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW, explains the advantages of the location: ‘Cross-border e-mobility is one of the keys to the success of the mobility transition. Upper Austria offers ideal geographical conditions for this. With a range of 400 km, Munich, Augsburg, Prague, Bratislava and Bolzano are directly accessible — sustainably, connected and without another stop.’
User-friendliness at the site is a top priority: drivers have access to a snack area, a vending machine and nearby shops. An advertising pole with a price display makes the charging park clearly visible from a distance, and the entire roof is equipped with a photovoltaic system, offering protection while charging. In addition, the installed video surveillance system provides greater security for e-mobility users. If necessary, up to six additional charging points can be installed.
Excellent access to the region
SMATRICS EnBW deliberately installs charging stations in heavily frequented areas along highways. St. Marienkirchen is located on the A8 exit towards Schärding and Passau. This makes the area particularly relevant for commuters between Germany and Austria, as well as long-distance traffic to and from the south.
For Gerhard Schwarzgruber, mayor of St. Marienkirchen bei Schärding, the town is predestined to be a location for ultra-fast charging infrastructure, and with good reason: ‘As a border municipality with excellent transport links, St. Marienkirchen plays a key role in e-mobility in Upper Austria. This is where major international transport routes meet important regional economic centres.’
Major expansion of ultra-fast charging stations in Upper Austria
Upper Austria is among the leading regions in Austria in terms of public ultra-fast charging infrastructure: there are over 700 publicly accessible HPC charging points in the federal state.
SMATRICS EnBW itself also significantly expanded its ultra-fast charging network in Upper Austria last year. ‘In 2025, the number of public HPC charging points from SMATRICS EnBW in Upper Austria rose by almost 60% to over 120, putting Upper Austria almost on a par with Lower Austria in our comparison of federal states,’ explains Landsbek.
