More than 100 new ultra-fast charging points: SMATRICS EnBW takes stock of the first half of the year

SMATRICS EnBW continues to focus on expansion along motorways and presents new features for more intuitive operation at its own fast-charging stations.

With over 100 new ultra-fast charging points in Austria, SMATRICS EnBW has reached an important milestone in the expansion of its charging infrastructure in the first half of 2025 – and is therefore exactly on schedule.

In the second quarter, 54 new ultra-fast charging points were installed at eleven locations in Austria. In the internal federal state ranking, Lower Austria (102 charging points), Upper Austria (90 charging points), and Vienna (74 charging points) continue to occupy the top spots. Investment was particularly strong in Carinthia and Upper Austria (ten each) as well as in Styria, Tyrol, and Vienna (eight each). In neighboring Italy, twelve more charging points were added in Friuli.

New locations, new features, new momentum

"The choice of strategically located charging locations is crucial for the future of e-mobility. With over 100 new ultra-fast charging points in the first half of the year alone and continuous technological development, we are making the mobility transition a reality," says Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW.

In the second quarter of 2025, SMATRICS EnBW will focus its expansion on key traffic hubs and location partnerships with retailers: More than half of all new charging points were installed directly at supermarkets or shopping centers. Three-quarters of the new charging points are located near highways (A1, A2, A4, A9, A12, and A23) – a clear signal for range optimization on long-distance routes, especially with the summer travel season and increasing traffic flows in mind.

Charging capacity is also continuing to increase. Around 80 percent of all ultra-fast chargers installed by SMATRICS EnBW in the second quarter have a capacity of 400 kW. This means that vehicles can charge for a range of 400 km in just 15 minutes.

New usability standards – now with charging curve insights

In addition to continuous expansion, SMATRICS EnBW is also optimizing user-friendliness at the charging stations. A special feature is the new charging curve feature, which provides transparent real-time information: In addition to the charging power, charge level, remaining charging time, and electrical parameters, e-mobility users now also receive live information on how to control the charging power – and whether this is currently being determined by the vehicle or the station. Landsbek: “Charging should not be a black box. If you understand the process in the background, you can control e-mobility more actively.”

Another step toward greater accessibility is expanded voice guidance: Four languages (German, English, Italian, and Spanish) are now available, which further simplifies operation, especially for international users.

Political impetus strengthens infrastructure expansion

SMATRICS EnBW expects a further boost for the expansion of the charging infrastructure in Austria in the second half of the year: At the beginning of July, the federal government announced funding of 30 million euros for the fast-charging infrastructure. At the same time, the new Electricity Industry Act is currently under review – with key implications for e-mobility and its planning reliability.

“We welcome the federal government's measures to promote fast-charging infrastructure. E-mobility no longer needs a vision, but rather security of supply,” emphasizes Landsbek. The next important step is certainly to make heavy-duty vehicles e-compatible. Austria has the know-how and strategic location to play a leading role in e-mobility.
