E-charging in overtaking mode: SMATRICS EnBW further consolidates fast-charging network in 1st quarter of 2025
The mobility transition is picking up speed - and SMATRICS EnBW is making sure that no one has to wait along the way. In the first quarter of 2025, the joint venture expanded its own High Power Charging (HPC) network in Austria by 46 charging points.
The expansion was particularly dynamic in Vienna and Styria, with 18 and twelve new ultra-fast charging points respectively. The trend in retail is also increasingly moving towards fast charging: In the first quarter alone, SMATRICS EnBW installed 32 of the 46 HPC charging points at retail partners at six locations.
Strong expansion in urban areas and in retail
"We are not just building charging infrastructure for today, but for what will be on our roads tomorrow. And the same applies to charging: As fast as a coffee - as far as a weekend trip,” explains Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW. SMATRICS EnBW is thus continuing on its growth path and making targeted investments in areas where the demand for high-performance charging infrastructure is particularly high.
Vienna recorded the biggest leap in development in the first quarter: from two HPC charging points at the end of 2023 to 64 now - this puts the federal capital in third place in the company's own ranking behind Lower Austria (102 HPC charging points) and Upper Austria (80 HPC charging points).
The strong demand in urban areas proves this: Fast charging is becoming a basic requirement for everyday life, especially in places where home or workplace charging is not possible. The ultra-fast chargers used by SMATRICS EnBW, particularly in charging parks, have an output of 400 kilowatts. This means that vehicles can charge for a range of 400 km in just 15 minutes.
Even greater focus on convenience and flexibility
When the expansion of the e-charging infrastructure began just over ten years ago, the focus was on a nationwide network. With modern charging parks, such as in Spielberg or Poggersdorf, charging speed, convenience and price transparency are increasingly taking center stage.
Austria now has a total of more than 27,000 publicly accessible charging points, of which more than 2,000 are HPC charging points. Around 200 more will be added to the SMATRICS EnBW fast charging network in 2025 alone. In addition, two charging parks have already been opened in northern Italy - in Brixen and Palmanova.
